India iron ore fines consumption in 2010-11 up by 50pct

Minister of Mines (Independent Charge), Mr Dinsha J Patel informed Lok Sabha informed a written reply that the total domestic consumption of iron ore fines as a percentage of total iron ore fines produced stood at 37%, 34% and 50% in the year 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 respectively.

Replying to the written question the Minister said iron ore fines if not disposed and stacked properly has potential to lead to environmental hazard apart from restricting further mining of iron ore.

He said that marketing of iron ore is not controlled by the government and is driven by market demand and supply. The government does not propose to create marketing facilities for iron ore fines.
